What Causes a Water Cooler to Leak?
If you have a water cooler leak, you first have to diagnose the problem/source of the leak. All it takes is a close inspection of the water cooler. And if, after carefully inspecting it, you’re unsure of what the cause of the leak is, we can help.
A water cooler leak can be caused by:
• A tiny crack or hole in the bottle – most of the time, a water cooler leak is caused by the bottle, not the actual cooler. The bottle on top of your cooler can develop tiny cracks that allow air into the bottle (and water to leak out of the bottle). When the bottles are being transported or if they are knocked around too much, they can sometimes develop hairline cracks, changing the air pressure in the bottle and causing a leak.
• A loose spout or spigot – a sure sign that the spigot is leaking is a catch tray full of water! Check your catch tray; if it is filled with water, check the spigot/spout. If it’s loose, it more than likely caused the water cooler leak. Tighten both the cold (blue) and hot (red) handles to make sure they are screwed tightly onto the spigot body.
• The water cooler itself – there are many, many parts inside the water cooler you can’t see – seals, gaskets, O-rings. Though it doesn’t happen often, these cooler parts can sometimes fail and cause a leak. This type of water cooler leak is not as easy to fix, because sometimes special parts are required. If you think your leak is the result of faulty cooler parts, call your water delivery company and ask for a cooler swap! In fact, by trying to fix the water cooler leak yourself, you could make the problem even worse.
